Latex Allergy Clothing Ideas

“Life is in seasons. Whatever season you find yourself, learn to adapt.”
Fela Bank-Olemoh

While I cannot guarantee that these products are completely latex free - these are good leads to help you find allergy friendly products. This blog focuses on office friendly work clothes.  I did not focus on linen since it is sometimes not allowed by the dress code.  It's helpful to group things by store while browsing, and cross reference things like t-shirts to cut down on shipping fees. The fabric of the clothing is usually 100% cotton, cotton linen blend, or 100% rayon (which is non-stretch like matte satin).  You can press cntrl f and search for the name of the vendor on this page to order multiple items from one company.  You may have to cut the elastic waist band out of some of the clothes.  For the most part - classic style clothes have more 100% cotton options.  You can also find 100% cotton clothing to buy online at practical work oriented sites like Aramark or bohemian sites like Newchic.  Extremely affordable clothing can be found at Carol Wright Gifts and AmeriMark.  You can also look up the phone number of the vendor and order the item by it's name in this listing.  If you prefer you can write to the company producing the item to inquire as to the latex content of the item.  Otherwise ask your doctor if you can wear nitrile gloves to remove the small amount of latex or hire a tailor to remove it.  It may be best to use Malwarebytes after shopping (to get rid of ads).  Also run antivirus (like Avast or AVG) once a day.

Tip: Press the control key and the f key, and type the word you are looking for - hit enter to locate it on this page.  Scroll down for affordable options.

CottonwaysNewchic and Ohmygauze are more bohemian style, and you can search amazon for 100% cotton gauze fabric items.  Prices listed are approximate and subject to change. For plus sizes on this page - hit control f and type the word plus.  If you find something without free shipping - you can always use the item name to search for another vendor/store (like amazon.com).
If you are going to buy used clothing (sometimes it does not hurt as much) it's very important that you wash it immediately with Borax combined with Oxy (colors) or Borax combined with bleach.  Also use a sudsing detergent.  You can also Lysol blazers. Used clothing can have fungal infections, skin mites or serious germs that can burden your immune system when they reproduce on or in you.  Keep the clothing sealed in a plastic bag with no holes in it until you wash it.  F.Y.I. Borax, Oxy and bleach generally have no fragrance.  Borax is for mites, and Oxy or bleach are for germs.  You can also make lavender spray with 10 drops of lavender oil (drug store), 3 oz. water, and 1 drop of dish soap.  It repels insects and makes your clothes last longer.

Search Terms:

  • Linen, linen cotton blend, pima cotton, supima cotton, chambray, 100 cotton, 100% cotton, pure cotton, 100% rayon (not the same thing as polyester), lyocell (a type of rayon), viscose (rayon), ring spun cotton (inexpensive but scratchy), 100% cotton seersucker, wool, 95% Viscose, 5% ElastaneRayon is a non-stretch fabric that is kind of thin and fluid in movement, and usually does not need a lot of ironing.  I have not looked into viscose rayon extensively, but it seems to be like silk in texture and look. Keep in mind that certain insects like to eat real silk when selecting fabrics.  Polyester might have latex in the blend.

  • You can research Tencel and Modal fabric.  I do not react to either, but some people do - depending on their allergies. Modal tends to feel like knit cotton.  It depends on where they sourced the wood fiber from (often bamboo).  Tencel tends to have the feel of thin faux denim shirts (chambray).
  • I would recommend against buying anything that does not say 100% cotton, 100% rayon, or compatible fabric.  You don't know what it is blended with.

    T-SHIRTS

It might be a good idea to pair up your t-shirt orders with other items/people.  The work wear websites usually have a better selection, but $5-10 shipping costs.  They also sell affordable pants and polos and button down shirts.

WOMEN'S PANTS - mostly linen, cotton, and rayon

WOMEN'S BLAZERS and JACKETS and SWEATER BLAZERS

Some of these items are Cotton Linen Viscose (looks like a normal blazer matte finish); Cotton Linen Blend (looks like smooth cotton broadcloth, but wrinkles in the back when you sit); Linen Rayon Blend (looks alot like cotton linen blend but more brittle - like a composite); 100% cotton (often seersucker cotton); and Lyocell (silk look rayon) or Tencel.

For most of these you may need to cut out the elastic at the waist.  I suggest you pin or sew it to a cotton belt before cutting into the elastic (so it still gathers normally).  Otherwise you can make pleats, or a draw string waist.

FABRIC - Types of cotton cloth for sewing

                  Modal

                  • Modal and modal blends (some people are sensitive to modal).  Modal tends to feel like cotton t-shirt fabric, but thicker.  It may depend on what type of wood fiber it is sourced from.  Some people think bamboo cross reacts with latex allergies.

                  MISC

                  Sanitary Products:

                  • Bra Work-Arounds
                  • Some of the bras that say latex free still bother me.  I put them in a white plastic (latex free) bag and put them in the sun for a year.  I left the bag open at one end to allow them to release the gas.  When I tried them on again they did not hurt. I have also noticed that my older bras that went through the dryer do not bother me.  That does make the elastic not work any longer.

                  • Sew an allergy blocker to the inside of the elastic: Polypropylene (which is food grade polyethylene number 2  high-density polyethylene or 5 - which is most often called polypropylene) plastic may be the main covering / sheet plastic to block latex sensitivities in baby mattresses.

                  • Bra liner: You can also make a bra liner out of a long tank top.  Fold the bottom of the tank top upwards and pin it.  Leave the top of it open to form a pocket.  You can put additional layers of allergy guards (like polypropylene zip lock plastic etc) in the layer between the folds of fabric. I have found plastic snaps to be useful to hold it in place.  I used a hole punch on the allergy guard inner layer (plastic) and attached the plastic snaps to the 2 layers of tank top.  That way I can attach the inner layer to the 2 tank top layers like a binder.  I can change what type of allergy guard I use each time I wear it.  I can also wash the tank top without mangling the allergy guard layer.  Polypropylene may block latex for those allergic to latex (it is used in baby mattresses as an allergy guard).  You can also try using a vinyl mattress cover (it must say vinyl or it may be latex - I would try Walmart, Meijer's or Target).  I have only had dependable results from solid plastic rather than the woven kind that lets air through.
                  • Sewing a bra: This is more complicated than it sounds due to fabric types.
                  • You can use cotton gauze to make an Ancient Greek style wrap halter top.  It would be the same shape as a string bikini top, but the fabric might form-fit more comfortably in cotton gauze.  You can also wrap the cups so they overlap diagonally.  You can also use cotton gauze for the draw string. You can use the adjustable buckles used for camping gear. Just sew a flower or flat bow over it if you need to. You can also make a sleeve of fabric to cover the buckle.
                  • You might try making a string bikini with the drawstring strung through the bottom of 2 triangles of t-shirt fabric.  Then sew any non stretch fabric similar to sheets/broadcloth or 3" wide ribbon in a triangle over the top - attaching directly to the string at the bottom (or it will not offer much support). You can also try non stretch lace over the top of the t-shirt material.  You want the fabric to breathe in the summer.  You also want it to line dry quickly in the winter.  It helps to have the shoulder straps be adjustable.  Usually people tie it in the front.  You can conceal the tie with a flat snap on bow or flower patch.
                  Underwear:

You should avoid having elastic latex at the tops of your legs. You can get/make sleep shorts with cotton covered waist bands, and replace the elastic with a draw string.

                  Socks:

Buster Brown 100% Cotton Socks, set of 3, Dr. Leonard’s, about $10

Buster Brown Ankle Socks, 3 Pairs, Vermont Country Store, about $12 or Amazon

                  Cottonique socks
                  Elite Elastic-free 100% Cotton Socks (2/Pack | Black) Cottonique
Socks without any elastic at all usually have
trouble staying up on your ankle. Some people like silver toe turn cuff socks, but they are not latex free. They are just mostly cotton.  If you buy 100% cotton socks - you might try using the cuff from some old socks to hold them up like a sweatband.

You might ask your Doctor about 85% cotton socks as well. Example: Goodfellow Men's BOOT Crew Socks 6-12 / 4 PAIRS BLACK & GREY

Target "personal care" section has a menu option called "health facts" with a Latex-free check box.
(I did not see this menu under the shoes area).

                  Blankets:

                  Coats and Winter wear

Polyfill might bother some people.  You can make a pashmina (large scarf) by purchasing 100% cotton plush fleece fabric and hemming the edges.  They are making shirt jaks now (lined shirt). You can also purchase a cotton trench coat (not much polyfill) or coat sweater (patterns), and sew a plush lining into it. If you have a throw blanket that you know doesn't bother you - you can use that for the lining. It helps to have a wind proof layer in the lining.  Gather the fabric around the wrists to keep wind from blowing up the sleeve.  If you make an interior pocket you can put something warm into it before you leave the house.

                    Floor materials

                    Research topics:

You may also have another allergy that is cross reacting with the chemicals sprayed to preserve the clothing.  You can try washing them in a non-scented glad reinforced tall kitchen white garbage bag (only 45 or 90 count) with a draw string.  Do not use force flex. Use boiling water, Dawn dark blue dish soap, and hand sanitizer.  Do not touch the water while it is hot.  Shake the bag by it's handles to agitate, soak for 60 minutes, and then drain it, and rinse it.  The boiling water may shrink the clothing, so only do this on oversized clothing.  If you can't shrink the clothes - try using the dish soap and hand sanitizer and soaking it longer.  For washing large items like coats - I used to poke a hole in the bottom of the bag to drain the water (since it is heavy).

                    • D-Mannose
                    • Possible cleaning products to use on Candida Auris in the environment (not guaranteed): Greased Lightening spray cleaner, Athlete's foot spray (alcohol based rather than powder or oil) with tolnaftate, CLR kitchen cleaner, and Mildew cleaners.  Bleach and Lysol may not work quite as well.
                    • Remove any "Burning Rubber" smells with baking soda and peroxide.
